IIPS Research Projects 2009

The Institute for International Policy Studies (IIPS) is pleased to announce the following research project plans for fiscal 2009.

Trilateral Dialogue in Northeast Asia (TDNA)
International conference and symposium
There are multiple foreign policy and security issues in the Northeast Asian region, including the problems regarding North Koreafs nuclear development. Meeting the challenges posed by this environment will require that Japan, the USA, and Korea?as democratic nations in the region?engage in comprehensive exchanges of views and coordinate on policy. In recent years, however, intellectual exchange between these three nations has been at a low ebb. In cooperation with the United States Institute of Peace and Koreafs Institute of Foreign Affairs and National Security, IIPS is staging TDNA, a trilateral Japan?US?Korea conference in order to stimulate intellectual exchange at all levels between lawmakers, government officials, and representatives of the private sector.

Japan?China Forum
International conference and symposium
A gathering of representatives from Japan and China, drawn from the realms of politics, economics, and academia, will engage in investigative discussion of the form that the Japan?China relationship should take in the future. They will also research and discuss the cooperative bilateral relationship and initiatives between the two nations in the Asian region as a whole, such as regional cooperation in the political, security, energy, and environmental spheres. This conference is intended to be a significant contribution to the mid to long term stability and development of the Asian region, as well as of course to Japan?China relations, through increased common understanding, the provision of recommendations to the governments of both nations, and the publication and general dissemination of the conference findings.

Japan?Taiwan Forum
International conference and symposium
Through research exchanges with the Foundation on Asia?Pacific Peace Studies (based in Taipei, Taiwan), we will engage in exchanges of views on policies geared towards the development of the entire Asian region, with a focus on issues such as security in the Asian region, Chinafs economic development and regional economic integration in Asia, and Asia and the new world order.

Prospects for the Japan?US Alliance
Seminar
As the cornerstone of Japanese security policy, the Japan?US alliance has been undergoing constant reinforcement. However, due to the changing nature of the security environment in which Japan and the USA find themselves, there is undeniably some degree of uncertainty over the future of the alliance. In order to preserve the strength of the alliance in the future, now is the time to reassess the significance of the alliance and strive to develop an even more sophisticated relationship.

For the past two years, IIPS has been building a research organization comprised of experts from both academia and business, and conducting multi faceted research on the future shape of the Japan?US alliance. As well as conducting more in depth research based on the work done to date, in the coming fiscal year we will also make use of the intermediate research results we have obtained so far to compile policy recommendations for both the Japanese and US governments.

In addition, IIPS will be staging lectures focusing on matters related to IIPS research topics, delivered by ambassadors posted to Japan and by experts both from Japan and overseas.
